This morning I went out to my coop (5 Silkies) and naturally their water was frozen overnight (we're in NY). I took the frozen water and left them a bowl of water while I defrosted their water feeders in the house. I went back to the coop a few hours later and the water bowl was filled with these little black bugs. They have the shape of a flea (not fleas though- I don't believe) and are very tiny. They were whizzing around the top of the water. I took the bowl out and took some pics- I will try to upload but seem to have problems uploading here. I dumped some of them on a paper towel to get better pictures and they jumped just like fleas. They are black and smush very easily with your finger. I am perplexed because if these were chicken parasites, I don't think they would jump off and get into the water. I checked a few of my chickens skin and they look all clear of anything. ?? Any help would be great~

I've never heard of those but I am about to look them up! Thanks! It's acutally pretty cold here. I think this morning it was about 26 degrees? I'm wondering if these bugs came off of them when they put their beaks in the water OR if they are coming from the earth. I can't imagine a bug jumping from warm body into a cold body of water. I just want to find out so I can properly treat my little chickadoos and/or treat the area. :)

I have tried 5x to upload the photo of these little buggers. For some reason, this site never agrees with me and pictures. If anyone wants to see pictures... let me know. I'll send them to your email.
