need some help please

i have 2 redstars chicks i`ve had them since they were 2 weeks old, now they were born in june of 2007, will they give me a sign as to when they are ready to lay eggs? or is there signs to look for, i wish i knew a link to find out things, so i dont bother yous with all my questions, thanks so much

I just got my first egg thurs and 2nd today. Mine started getting VERY loud, and more friendly with me. They also started investigating the nest boxes very well a few days befor i got that 1st egg. Mine are 24 weeks, but most get them a little sooner than that.

I don't personally know about redstars, but most hens don't lay until around 5 months or so. Yours, from what you said, are around 4 months. However, you can begin watching for their combs and waddles to turn bright red, a sure sign eggs are coming soon. Also, if they begin squatting down when you walk up or allow themselves to be bred by a roo, then time's getting close.

Don't feel bad about asking questions, we've all been where you are, however, you can find lots of answers through the search.

I noticed my redstars got real antsy and acted differently - also their combs and wattles get real red. Before you know it - eggs!

I looked and looked for all the signs, checked combs, waited for squatting, gave them layer, oyster shells, golf balls, more treats, less treats, pep talks, showed them a calendar and even had a meeting with all the girls explaining the facts of life. Bottom line is they gave them up when they darn well felt like it.
Don't know which is worse, waiting for that first egg to hatch or waiting for that first egg to be produced.

redstar....first let me say...welcome to the group! ( and the addiction

) I dont have redstars....however...look for the dark red combs and wattles...and thier little skinny rearend seems to widen a bit....sorta like us women after we have babies...LOL. Watch for the looking around the nest boxes...Should be any time soon I would think. Dotn worry about ? bothering us with questions" thats what we are all here for....to ask, and learn. Just remember, someone might not get to your question right away....be patient...someone will come along sooner or later, that knows the answers to your questions.

i read alot on here that you should feed them chicken scraps? mine has never had any thing from the kitchen only their laying mash, cracked corn, and grits, is that the hold up for eggs.

My thoughts...could be just the time of year delaying them getting started good yet since daylight hours are fewer.....I've always heard Redstars are very good layers....maybe adding a light source on a timer for 12 good hours...dawn to dusk..

Sounds like your doing everything right...just need patience alittle longer...

I wouldn't hoard them over with table scraps.....mine get some just when I have leftovers I think they might like...sometimes its not good for them to get too many...I wouldn't feed them too much cracked corn either...I just use that as a treat in winter to keep them warm at night...its candy to them...

giving them slices of bread does it hurt them i give them like 2 slices a day.
