Need some input about coop design

I have come to the conclusion that we DO over compensate at times. You are right....no one thought about these things 100 years ago. I think it's just like having kids (only these have feathers). Ya live & learn. It seems the simpler the better with our girls!:D

I have an OSB plywood floor covered in a deep layer of pine shavings... no problems. I also sprinkle DE and Sweet PDZ in the shavings. The DE cuts down on the bugs and the PDZ cuts down on the amonia smell. I think the wood floor would last longer if I had put linoleum over it. If you put linoleum down I would sprinkle some DE under it so the bugs won't feel like staying there.

If you are worried about the coop not being water proof and therefore not having drainage, you could also use Stall Dry on the floor. Stall Dry sucks up wetness/moisture.

A plan dirt floor is an invitation for mice/rats to make tunnels under the structure going in and out of the coop. Trust me on this... I know from experience.
