Need to kill these dang flies!!

We have a terrible time with flies, too. Best deterrent is to keep things as cleaned up as possible, as they breed in the poo. Then those fly bags are very effective, the ones you fill with water and smell hideous. Hang them down wind. When things have gotten really bad i lay out those super sticky fly sticks, not the hanging fly paper, but the cylinder ones. i'll set them on the ground wherever the animals can't get to them and they seem to fill up quickly.

i've read about hanging vanilla scented car deodorizers. Tried that and they didn't work. Have also tried fly predators. But they are expensive and i didn't think they helped much.

I clean daily, and keep all spilt food cleaned up and wipe things down in the coop ( roosts, walls etc) twice a month. I will try those sticks and see how it goes, I'm trying to keep it natural if I can , sometimes you just cant.

the only home made fly spray that worked for me is vinegar. I pretty much pickled my farm

just reg distilled or cider vinegar? do you mix with water? I dont care if mine smells like a pickle I just wanna get the flies gone..

We had a horrible fly invasion - literally thousands of them. They lined the walls and ceiling of my chicken house like a black carpet. I clean religiously and they still moved in. It was just awful. We waited until nightfall when it was cool and dark. They are not active at night, and it's like they're in a trance, or dormant. We took the ShopVac and sucked them all up! We were able to suck up about 90% of them in one night. We sprayed some permethrin based spray into the nozzle of the ShopVac while it was running - instant gas chamber.

Funny sticky fly trap story..........I hung up one of those sticky traps where I thought the birds couldn't reach it. It filled up with flies almost instantly. (The flies were horrendous this summer.) I was back out there later in the day and saw Farrah, one of my EE hens sitting on the roost pole picking the flies off the sticky trap. Since they were all stuck on by their legs, she was yanking their bodies off, and the entire trap was covered in legs with no bodies!!!

Way to go Farrah!! Does vinegar really work?? Does it kill them or just keep them away?

I would add water to the plain distilled vinegar. I did find the more vinegar the better, no exact measurement. I put mine in a spray bottle and sprayed everything even the sand. I got desperate once and dumped it straight on my concrete barn floor. Also if you have horses you can add skin so soft to the mixture and spray them down.
