Hi there, my name is paige and I need to know if I can raid chickens for eggs in my backyard in elizebethtown pa 17022. If somebody can tell me if I can that would be great. If I can raid chickens in my yard I would want silkies or the type you normally see. Thanks for answering my question!!!

I agree with GitaBrooks- silkies are wonderful but if you need lots of eggs go with the "egglayer" breeds like Barred Rocks, Black Australorps, Sex Links, Rhode Island Reds, etc. (Or just have a larger number of silkies to compensate!)

If you are going to have silkies too I recommend getting them at the same time as the other breeds so they won't be bullied when introduced later on. Silkies will sometimes be at the top of the pecking order but they can be bullied with they are the new kids on the block.

Another option is to have your hens hatch out silkies and they will defend them as they grow up.

McMurray hatchery has a chick selector tool that you might like.

Nice to meet you Paige, hope you will be able to have backyard chickens. Silkies are very popular but, they are not great layers and they tend to go broody often. That means they want to sit on eggs and hatch out chicks. During that period they will stop laying after they reach a certain number & stay on the nest.

Thanks for telling all of this about silkies to me, now I dont really want them anymore. But nobody answered my question about having them in my backyard in mount joy township. So if somebody can answer my question I would love that!
