I have had chickens since October 1, 2009; started with 8 chicks. Now I have 50 hens/pullets, 3 roosters, 23 ducks, 4 turkeys and 2 geese. Plus two small dogs and a cat. And 24 eggs in the incubator.
I keep feed available 24/7 -in the coop - with a former dog dish as a free-choice crushed oyster shell dispenser outside of the coop in the side yard. However, my flock ranges freely over just under two-thirds of an acre. My property is fenced.
Every day, they get black oil sunflower seed (BOSS) as hand-fed treats. A couple times a week, I hang a head of cabbage from a shepherd's hook for a rousing game of Tether Cabbage.
They also get kitchen scraps whenever I have enough to share. (Dogs get first whack at it.)
