I've seen metal wiring conduit used. It works much like pvc except you don't glue it together. All the big box stores sell it in different diameters... 1/2", 3/4", 1".
I recall it being a tad over $3 for a 10ft piece of the 3/4" stuff (or was that 1/2"?). Like PVC, it has a bunch of connectors, T's, etc. so you can link it all together. And it bends pretty easily (smaller diameters are easier). And you can drill holes into it to screw things together. It is heavier than pvc... but also stronger.
Keep it light... you'll thank yourself every time you move it!
