Hello everyone,

My chicken is in a really sorry state right now. She was either attacked or at something sharp, but one way or another her chest looks quite mutilated. Her crop is busted open with its content spilling out. There seems to be a tube (I'm guessing that carries the food and water) that is dangling out from it as well. There is also blood present around the area.

My question is should I just put her down or does anyone think there would be any hope in attempting to suture her back together and see how far antibiotics get her. I am ready to put her down but I figured I would ask first. I've included the best pictures I could get.

That's an extensive injury. Likely would require stitching to fix, if it can even be fixed. Either take her to a vet or cull her

Folks on BYC have successfully repaired torn crops, but if something internal is extruding, I don't know.

If she weremine, I'd get to a vet asap. I know that isn't an option for everyone, though.

So sorry you are dealing with this...
:hugs

I've had chickens survive some incredible penetrating injuries. But nothing that severed internal organs.

The humane thing to do is to end its suffering.

When the need arises - and it does - you must be able to shoot your own dog. Don't farm it out - that doesn't make it nicer, it makes it worse.

The gullet is completely disattatched. She will not be able to eat. Even if she does try and eat, she won't get nutrients, anything she does try and eat will get into the wound. Wich will likely get infected.
