    Here in the Appalachian Mountains.

Something crossed the road as I was driving today at 3:00 PM.

It was body was at least about 18'' long. The fur was not flat nor really fluffy. The body color was very dark blackish brown. The tail was very long and very bushy (maybe a 6'' diamater of fur). The tail color was more of a reddish brown that contrasted with the body color.

The animal was very low to the ground and was wary as it looked back a few times. The head was longer and leaner than a groundhog. There was faint stripes or a stripe on the face. I would estimate the weight at 10 pounds plus.

What the heck was it? Never seen one before.

Sounds like a red fox, though they are normally nocturnal.

I would say it was Probably a fisher cat or a wolverine. That's just a guess though

How far south are you in the Appalachians? Both fishers and wolverines have normal ranges in the northeast US.
