Awesome! I am so excited. I went to look at lowes at the ponds, pumps, and liners for my aviary today! I didnt come home with anything though.

Just make sure you have every aspect planned out. Build the aviary and everything that goes along with it, and try to get a started pair in the fall. Be ready when they come, there is nothing worse than someone being unprepared when they get new arrivals.

Okay, so were do i get my wire? I have leftover 2x4 welded wire, but coons or something could reach in. Oh, and there will be a sight barrier. When I was looking at pond stuff I also looked at hardware cloth. The tallest they had was 36 in. How am I supposed to do this if its that short. Can anyone post pics of their hardware cloth setup?

Lowes, Home Depot, and Tractor Supply company sell various sizes.

I am probably heading over to TSC next weekend to pick out my wire.

They seem to offer more sizes and lengths than Lowes and Home Depot.


From what I have read, a majority of people have used 1 inch or less wire (regardless of wire type).

Okay well I cant find nothing! Can some one post a link to what they have used or would used for a duck aviary and/or chicken run?

If you were planning to make the aviary 6' foot tall, like I saw in one of your plans, then you could have a 3' sight barrier and 3' of hardware cloth. Or just run a 2x4 or something horizontal and join two pieces of hardware cloth together at the 2x4.

We had a tough time finding them cheap. They are just greenhouse (cold frame) arches. We got ours in Amish Country in Ohio at a garden supply store. You could check local garden stores or look around on craigslist for greenhouses for sale.

Use electric wire around the bottom of your pens if critters are a problem in your area, dispite what wire you use, they'll still get in without it.
I run a strand at 6 and 12" from ground level, that stops them, no wire alone will, your 2x4 welded wire is great and last much longer than standard chicken wire, hardware cloth wire is great too, but can get pricey if you are planning on using much of it.
Go to any local feed and seed store, home improvement place, building supply store, or Tractor supply, they all have various types, not much on line about it.
2 " top rite aviary netting is great for the tops, Strombergs ahs great prices on it, 1/2 of what most places sell it for.
