I will be going in front of the township to ask then to adopt and change the zoning to allow chicken in the town ship. Would you all please email me with letters, qiuck notes of why we should. I would like to print off as many as I can to take to the board so that they can read them.

Bring up cat and dog facts, amount of poo generated, wandering the neighborhood, attacking people, etc. Yet people everywhere are permitted to keep them as pets. Oh, don't forget the barking or cat yowling in the middle of the night. If you're lucky you'll get someone who lost a lot of sleep because of cat or dog noises.

I don't think denegrating a common species of pets is the way to go. It is one thing to mention or document that they, too, create nuisances, but disparaging them is likely to be detrimental to the point you want to make--chickens are appropriate urban/suburban animals when kept responsibly.

Check with municipalities of similar population and see whether or not they allow chickens. Get a list of those that do and the number of complaints they have had. I think you will find in most cases there are not many if any complaints. This information will go a long way in influencing the township board.

I'd suggest talking to your county extension agent, in the phone book under county government, and discuss it with them. They may have statistics or other information you can use. Anything you can get from them will carry more weight than something off the internet.

You might also talk to your animal control people, the people at the pound that will have to deal with any problems. What would be their concerns and how can you address them in an ordinance. If you can get them to support you instead of fighting you, you are going to be way ahead.

You can look through this section for more ideas.

Also, in this section, you can see what other towns in your state have ordinances allowing chickens and what the restrictions are.

Good luck!
