I am new to the whole raising chickens scene...we purchased 6 RIR chicks...will be 4 weeks old on Sunday June 7. 5are pretty much feathered...nice tails etc...

One little girl (well maybe...) seems to be much farther behind in feathering. She or he seems healthy, eats well otherwise fine..just not looking like the other girls. We lovingly call her Peanut.

Other girls have full wings, nice tails, etc...but not Peanut! Could Peanut be a roo?

Picture 1 and 2 are of Peanut. Feathers on his/her back are different than the others. Pretty much no tail...wings are not as feathered.

Picture 3 shows one of the other girls...you can see she is very feathered, and has a nicer tail...so does the other girl in the pic.

So...Peanut...Hen or Roo?

Welcome to BYC.

I think it is a bit early to tell.

Males can be slower getting their feathers in. They are awfully young though. In the next couple of weeks you should be seeing some comb growth. Cockerels tend to get their combs faster and larger than the female chicks. They will also have reddened combs before the females.
