I have (correction had) 8 young adult hens and one rooster. Now I am down to zero roosters and 4 hens. They are coming up dead. No signs that anything has gotten to them. At first I thought maybe hens were dying due to laying eggs. They were just getting to the point of egg laying so I went and bought oyster shell. Next the rooster died and today another hen. So that can't be it. Any suggestions? They do not roam freely and have a pretty good size pen and coop. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to BYC!

I am so sorry about what is going on in your flock. Sounds like you may have some sort of virus or bacteria, something that is contagious that is killing your flock.

You might want to post this in our emergency section for more help. You will need to be more specific on how they looked when they died, any outward signs of anything, where they thin at death, color of combs, poop color and consistency, over all condition, anything that might be a symptom to what is going on...

I hope you can get this figured out soon. I am so sorry.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sorry about the problems you are having with your flock. X2 on posting in the Emergencies forum, give your surviving girls are really good going over (here is a nice article on things to check) http://www.communitychickens.com/2012/07/9-point-comb-to-toe-chicken-check-up.html#.U4opnXZW_bN and if you still have the bodies of any of the ones you lost recently, check them over really carefully also, especially for any wounds hidden under the feathers etc.

Thank you. They have been found as if they just fell asleep and haven't had any problems at all. Go in to feed and check for. Eggs every night and seems one by one I'd find one dead in one of the nest box or under the nest box.

You may want to take one (dead) bird to the vet for a necropsy to see if he can tell what you are dealing with. Could they be coming into contact with areas a neighbor might have sprayed for insects, or fertilizer etc? IS the food fresh with no signs of mold.
