needing* advice for cleaning my Roost

Hello,

I'm just after some ideas of how to clean my chicken roosts. The sheds are corrogated iron with concrete floors. This will be the first time they have a major clean out since we've moved in. I've already scraped and shovelled the poop off the floor but there is a lot of dust - would it be a good idea to pressure wash the whole walls and floor. Is there any safe disinfectants that I could use to kill germies?

I know there are many ways to clean a coop so I'm interested in how you would do it...

Oxine is supposed to be an excellent disinfectant around chickens, but it is not cheap. A mild ammonia and water solution will kill cocci; of course you would want to be able to rinse it out well. A mild bleach solution kills many other germs. (Does everyone know now that you can't ever mix chlorine and ammonia?) I don't recall reading of anyone using anything else, but I'm sure there are other options.

For disinfecting, regular household bleach mixed 10% with water, one part bleach to nine parts water, makes an excellent treatment. Wet everything down, then spray on this mixture. You can let it dry. It won't smell as do ammonia and vinegar. The mixture will kill almost everything. It is hard to beat the cost.

The coops are pretty soiled. I really should try and not get too carried away with scrubbing and disinfecting or next I'll have the urge to hang bunting in there...

My biggest concern is the ladder leading to the roost/nest box area. My chickens spend time on the ladder. It has a platform mid way which is the turning point to the roost. They soil the ladder and it doesn't come off. Chicken poo stain is there for good. I take a wire brush and brush of crusty matter but the stain remains. Oh well, it's a chicken coop after all. LOL

Unless you've had an outbreak of disease or pests, I see no need to "disinfect" a coop.
It will only remain sterile for as long as it takes to put the birds back in

Shovel out the worst of it, throw in some fresh bedding, and don't worry about it anymore

To my surprise, the roost/nest house is staying clean. Not sterile, but clean. The poop caddy is working perfectly, the floor in the area stays clean. The doing their business where it was intended. I don't feel the need for disinfecting. I'll save that for any illness that comes up.
