Needing Answers

In all my years of raising chickens I've never seen anything like this. It looks like the crop was hanging out. But how and/or why did this happen. Any thoughts?

I've already put him down. He was beginning to gurgle and choke on his own blood. I just want some information just in case this ever happens again.

My goodness, I haven't seen that before. Are there any chest wounds>? Can you tell for sure that it was the crop? Are you able to do a necropsy? Someone here once posted a picture of a hen with a huge swollen tongue, but I was a little skeptical of that. I'm not sure if it is possible for the crop to come out, or if a predator could have pulled it out. So sorry that this happened.
