needing homesteading buddies

I was just wondering if anyone could tell me, how many acres I would need to plant to feed 50 chickens and ducks for a year. I also have no real idea of WHAT is best to feed them. I live with my elderly, disabled parents. They have 8 acres of mostly wooded land. 3 acres is for the house, yard, and animal pens, so 5 acres of it is not being used. We are struggling right now, and so I have been trying to bring my parents around to the idea that we should clear part of the woods out and grow as much of our food and our animals food as possible. The thing is.....I dont really know anything about homesteading. Ive been buying books and reading articles about it for a while, so Im starting to get an idea of how to do things. i guess what Im trying to say is; I really just need more experienced people to talk to.

Thanks! I'm excited to learn more. The chickens were already here when I moved in and I dont know a lot about them. My mom isn't really able to help me much so I dont have anyone to ask questions.
