Here in this part rural FL...we shoot first with Law Enforcements blessing (at least the officers Ive met). If its attacking your livestock and is that nasty and might be turning towards you, your kid etc. killing is OK to not only protect your chicken/goats etc, but yourself! It could have rabies! You dont know. Set a live trap out.....at least here Animal control will give you Big Dog Live Traps for a short period of time...you might have to cage in a smaller cage a duck or chicken and traumatize it a bit as bait as thats what they are coming for...not a can of dog chow.
I would not leave a nice note...I would imply in the note that next time you WILL SHOOT TO KILL (even if you dont even own a gun).
