So we are getting new neighbors and I am worried about their dogs. I usually let my 2 month old chickens free range in the yard because we don’t have any dogs around us besides ours who has been trained not to chase the chicks. It looks as if there is a border collie and two smaller dogs moving in two doors down. I am worried the dogs will chase my chickens and am keeping them in their coop for now. If it turns out the dogs do chase the chicks, (I will ask the owners) I will be very disappointed because they love being outside and pecking around for bugs. I am worried they will be bored in their coop and I won’t get the entertainment I do from watching them fly around and have fun...any ideas?

The very first thing you should do is talk to the new neighbors, explain your concerns and see what kind of solutions you can come up with together. Maybe they are ok with working to train their dogs as well, maybe they’d be willing to have a schedule where you can plan to have the chickens out at certain times and they can plan to have the dogs out certain times, maybe they already have plans for some type of fencing to keep their dogs in. But please remember to try and work at this together because neighbor wars are never any fun. Also be sure to have a back up plan to keep your chickens in your yard too as they may not want them scratching and pooping on THEIR lawn.

Thank you, I will have a conversation with them in the next few days!
