Neighbor wont mow his field. Having problems with rats.

It is a fire hazard. Local resources are tied up around here and I hate to get Govt. involved. I have tried emailing the guy and he hasn't answered me. I think I will try the barrel thing and spray some roundup around the tall weed that are against the derelict building. Thank you all for the great advice. People on this site are so darned helpful!!

You have no right to mow your neighbor's field without permission. He may be growing hay that he plans to harvest for all you know. By all means ask his permission, but unless he grants that permission, stay off his property.

Just One Bite rat poision is supposed to be pretty good, and limits secondary poisoning. You need to place it in bait stations so that non-target animals will not get to it. I realize that you do not likely have roof rats, but the bait stations and places to locate them are covered pretty well at http://www.roofrat.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=27&Itemid=41 There are several different pages and links here with useful information.

Keep your own yard tidy (to prevent hiding places), keep all food in metal containers that the rats cannot get into, and ratproof your coops (the home proofing page on the above link offers good advise).

For most cats, grown rats are too large to handle, although they will catch and dispatch juveniles. There are some cats who will successfully take on adults (I have two who will). Terriers are usually very good ratters, although they may also pose a threat to your birds if not well trained and supervised.

One day when I have time I'll tell you about eradicating rats living under the slab of my dog kennel. Long story but matches, gasoline, explosions and singed dogs were a commonality.

This sounds like it ought to start off with the "You might be a Redneck if" phrase.

I will go on the property if I want to. I hope he says something, then me and him can have a nice discussion about his rats. I don't want a Hatfield and McCoy situation here but I cant control the rats if I can't get to the source. All I have is chihuahuas and they aren't much bigger than the rats.
