Hi guys, we have our coop in our back yard, we live in a neighborhood, and wondering about starting a compost for the poop we will clean out of the coop. I have seen some compost bins on amazon, is this the way to go? Whats the best and cleanest way to do this for a backyard without taking away from our backyard elements. I do not want to just start a pile in the yard of course!

Thanks so much!

How large is your run and how many birds are you housing? Under the right circumstances you can compost right in the run using the deep litter method....no smell, no mess.

My grandpa has had a compost in his back yard for years and he used old pallets to contain it (you can look up on YouTube there are several ways to put them together from simple to elaborate). We call his back yard our heaven on earth has such a beautiful garden, fruit trees perfect green grass. His compost his tucked away in a corner of the yard and you really dont noticed it.
We are going to start composting and will be using the pallet method. I have done a lots of research about different methods and it really comes down to what will work for you. The down side of the compost bins/tumblers that I saw was that they are small and pricey. For us the pallets will give us the option of a small pile that can grow so we won't be limited to how much we can compost.
My grandpas method is very clean and organized. He just has 3 pallets to make a corral and a 4th that acts like a door. and then he adds stuff mixes and waters when needed.
Good luck let us know what you decide and how it works for you

How exactly do I start? Lets say I get a bin? Do I just start filling with some leaves, shavings mixed with the poo? I have 3 chickens now and will be adding 4 more in a month or so!

That's how I'm going to start I'll also add lawn clippings, kitchen scraps like banana pills, rinds. If you want it to compost faster then you need to have them broken up in pieces if speed does not matter just toss them in. One thing that almost every one says is to shred your leaves before adding them

How long does it take to break down? Is this stuff good after it breaks down to put around trees, flowers, etc? I dont really have a garden, but figured compost was better than throwing away each week? Or maybe I should just throw away each week in trash pickup?

You can sell or trade compost, why fill the landfill?

How long it takes to break down depends on your set up some that I have read about range from 7 weeks to months
Yes it will be perfect to use around your trees, flowers...
lol this may sound weird but once it's composted it smells good there's just something and rich dirt hehe I blame my grandpa

Yes, that's exactly how to start whether you build a bin, start a pile or buy something.

I have 2 of these:

I put all the garden trimmings in the bins as well as chicken droppings that don't get mixed in with the chicken bedding. (If you have leaves or mowed grass clippings, put them in too) Every once in a while I water the bins down. It's a tidy set up and was easier/faster for me than building something would have been.

Kitchen scraps can go in the compost bin as well but we mostly use the worm bins for that.
Time rate for everything varies on how you manage it. Leave it alone, you'll have compost next year. Stir, water etc and adding lots of nitrogen will break it down faster.
You can use the compost around your trees and flower beds or have gardening friends come take it away.
