The neighbor lady next door to us feeds ALL the feral cats around here. They are not spayed or neutered and breed like rats. I cheer when I see the splattered remains of one on the street. (sounds bad, but I am at my limit) They stay out of the back yard because our Great Pyrenees HATES cats! She also doesn't care much for the chickens, but they are safe in their coop.
She has kept opossums and raccoons out of the yard. I know, because I have seen them in the yard behind ours looking wistfully at the coop. The feral cats crap all over our front yard and are a nuisance.
if your big dog does not patrol the yard, then get a "companion" for it and preferrably one that defends it's territory like our GP does. Then you have a new pet, the cats don't DARE step their dainty little paws in your yard and no one's cats are harmed.
