neighborhood meaty co-op idea

I'd choose venison over beef any day. Thanks anyway.

You can raise ducks economically. Pekins are just as efficient and just as large as Cornish Cross. They can be self-sustaining. You can hatch and raise ducklings. Plus, they have better personalities.

However, they are not quiet. The only quiet ducks are Muscovy. Muscovy produce excellent meat, but I don't have knowledge about feed conversion. They take longer to get to butchering size.

If your neighbors are interested in meat chickens, you could all split a box of Cornish Cross chicks and then get together and butcher. You can't hatch your own chicks, but they are certainly cheap enough to buy. They are butchered before the roosters start to crow and cause problems. Feed conversion is really good and you only have to keep them around for 8 weeks.
