Neighbors dog a saint!

I'm surprised a beagle would be protective. I guess if she's been around them without them running away from her, then she'd be protective.
I'm hoping I can get our two herding dogs acquainted with our chicks(expecting 2/23!) and have them be somewhat protective as they grow. I have no expectation like that of our Jack Russell!

What a great story! Thank you for taking the time to post it!

That's really great. My dogs also go a long way from keeping predators at bay and can be trusted around the chickens, after some training. I keep saying that on here and suspect not everyone believes that they are truly trustworthy. Mine free range over several acres with woods and several predators. I lost a bunch of chickens to fox and who knows what else before I decided to train the dogs and turn them loose. Since then, in well over a year, I lost one hen who I believe was lost to an egg laying problem. I also lost 4 chicks in one day, I suspect to a hawk. No other losses.

Thanks. Our property backs up to over 100 miles of swamp/weland, so there are a TON of natural predators just a stone throw's away.

But it does seem like the neighborhood dogs are a much greater problem for BYCers, which is awful.

I will never, ever understand why you would have a dog and not want it to stay on your property. Why have it then?
