I am both sad and mad. The neighbor who moved in this summer, has made a practice of letting their dogs run the neighborhood. Daily someone comes close to running them down on the road. Today one of their dogs came into my back yard, into my fenced in run and took one of my favorite hens. Animal Control says don't go talk to them, we will. I say, someone needs to let them know that next time It will not end well for the dog, so keep it penned up. I have kids and chickens who should be safe in my yard. The dog owner took the mangled chicken to the neighbor across the street, thinking it was one of theirs. He said it was almost gone when my husband went to talk with him, to see if he’d lost any chickens or ducks today too. He offered to keep it there. Since it keeps my kids from seeing it I thought it was a good idea. He said it was so badly chewed it was hard to recognize and probably unsavable but he will let us know if it lives through the night :(

With Animal Control saying to you "don't go talk to them", did that mean that AC would be talking to them?? Somebody sure should talk to them and explain the realities that could come their way IF another attack occurs. Sorry for your loss and good luck.

Yes, they said they are sending out an officer in the morning as well as requiring they pay for the chicken. They said the first time is a warning they second time they take the dog. Everyone in the neighborhood has livestock, chickens/ducks/horses/dogs etc. it’s just this one family that allows their dogs to run wild.

The truth is...the dog will be back. And probably do allot more damage than just one hen. I don’t know your life circumstances. If you own a gun or not. Dogs get shot where I live. Everyone’s aware. Irresponsible dog owners
Remember it’s legal Everywhere to shoot a dog that comes after you ;)
I’m sorry for your loss. And so angry that you have to now take care of a problem because of lack of respect and responsibility from your neighbors.

Dogs love chew toys that run!

I agree in the case not to talk to the dog's owner. Because my next step would be that the next time the dog appeared on my property it would be disappearing (SSS). Talking to the dog's owner now would attached you (me) to the dog's disappearance.

When I say SSS (shoot, shovel and shut-up) I am referring to the legal protection of my family and livestock. By eliminating the predator on the quiet, any repercussions or threats from the predator's owner are greatly diminished. Eliminates political pressure from any questioning law enforcement officers too.

I was raised to take care of a problem personally instead of relying (or hoping) someone else or the government would.
