neighbor's dog killed a chicken

not the dog's fault, one of my hens hopped over the chain link fence and a jack russell literally tore that hens butt up. i got to the chicken while she was still alive. the dog ate her little tail feather button and she was bleeding. she was alive last night. the bleeding was stopped and she was able to walk around. i put her inside for the night in a crate. but this morning she was dead. was there anything else i could have done to help her?

Sorry for your loss..........you did what you could, don't feel guilty. Build a higher fence is the only solution to prevent similar from happening again, Sue

question... chickens don't "fly" but they can definitely get over a 4' fence. would clipping their wings help keep them from getting up that high?

Maybe. There are better solutions than clipping tho. Add something to top of fence that is wobbly as they like to land on top rail then go over. A 1-2 foot extension of fence with light weight netting or chicken wire might do the trick, lots of solutions here but you'll have to search for them.
