Just last Sunday a chocolate lab showed up on my property and I found it harassing my broody with chicks - the dog had no intention of leaving and acted like my house was it's new home. I was furious. I have lived here for 19 years and never seen the dog before but we have a lot of new homes in the area thanks to a 120 acre farm being developed
Could not find the owner and had no idea where it came from. Tied it to a post by the road thinking the owners would be out driving around trying to find it. Think again. Next day dog still there - we took it to the Humane Society. THREE days later, the owner showed up who lived .3 mile away looking for their dog.
Next time - there is no second chance. It will be a dead dog.
I don't care if someone has a dog but it bloody well better not be on my property chasing my livestock.

Evidently, and fortunately, you have *no* idea. I know people who let their dogs kill all kinds of their own livestock, including their own chickens.
It's very difficult to live near someone who doesn't care about their own, because they're not going to care about yours either
