Neighbors to close for comfort

I would be careful about thinking that. 9 out of 10 times a realtor/ private owner will tell a potential buyer that the farm animals, gun range, gun store (in home), junk yard or what ever will have to move soon because of development.
North of Chicago its the same. Houses, houses, houses. People move from the city, see/hear different things and say..."we didnt do it like this in the city." Then try to change things.
Hunting is one issue...hear gun shots, call police.
Farm animals...yuk! They breed diseases. But they lived with rats in the city.
IMO, you should feel threatened...to a certain extent. Dont be pushy, but dont get pushed either. Attend city meetings, this will alert you to any neighbors filing a complaint without telling you. This will give you ample time to prepare for any problems. Just because they dont complain, and they smile, dont let your guard down.

LMAO....

we just bought our place a month ago but they are clearing acres of land and putting up subdivisions about a mile up the road. one place already has the privacy wall and one or two HUGE houses in it, the others are just planned ,started clearing the land and have signs up showing the plan for the building.

we're zoned open rural so i'm just hoping they dont decide to rezone the area. It's like people who build across from an airport and then complain about the noise. when i learned to fly the airport I was flying out of had that problem...they had a noise abatement procedure, make a sharp left after takeoff...not a good thing to do when you're going slow ,but it made the people in the subdivision happy

Be nice, try to start up a friendship with your new neighbors...

But if they complain, make sure you remind them who was there first and if they don't like it, either suck it up or move.

I don't think you really mean that.
If your animals trespass, all your neighbors need to do is complain to the city and you'll be forced to put up a fence to contain your animals.

I like the country, but I admit when my neighbor uses the lot across from mine to raise a few cows and puts their drink right across from my bedroom window, I wish there were city rules. When the trash man doesn't come for two weeks, I wish there were city rules. When watching the progession of decomposition on the same stray large breed dog for 3 weeks only being moved ever so slightly as its repeatedly hit by oncomming traffic, I wish there were city rules.
3 stray cats i feed, and 5 stray cats that fight the other three for the food, I wish there were city rules.

Some people have this romantisized vision of rural america being sleepy quiet lil towns. the truth is, rural America has fewer but more pronounced noises, that often begin earlier in the AM. The scents of succulent fruits and veggies are countered with the pungent odor of compost and animal poop. That tractor roaring at 5am, a cow in heat. Thats what rural life really consists of. i find that a lot of city folk that move to the country really should have moved to the suburbs if they want to sleep in till 10am and complain about barking dogs

So very true.
The country is not the suburbs. If you like manicured lawns, the smell of succulent fruits, etc etc then the suburbs are for you. Thats why they all live on very organized lots, and need to make a bunch of rules to keep it that way. Some of those rules you may like, some you may not. Now in the country we don't like a lot of rules. Thats why we live so far apart. If my neighbor wants to let goats run all over his yard, thats great. If I want 100 roosters all crowing in unison he feels the same way. Some say fences make good neighbors, I say distance makes good neighbors. As far as the smells we have convinced our self that we are really smelling roses. You get use to it, at least to thepoint you don't notice it so much.

I have a whopping eighth of an acre. It's one of the bigger yards.
There's maybe 30 feet between my house and the one next to on either side.

No way I could do the city...shiver...I would love the country, but that's going by the wayside.
60 years ago, there was a pig farm a half a mile away from here, now it's $500K McMansions. Digging the foundations they kept finding the bones LOL

I would've loved to live here that long ago. Wild turkeys in the woods at the end of the street, me and another neighbour with our chickens, my best friend with his bees...would've been awesome! sigh

The cops don't do anything about the music that knocks your fillings out, but the Health Dept will be at your door with a complaint about a rooster.
I have to keep my chickens in their yard, but a neighbour lets their dog out loose.
Isn't it great?

You don't quite understand where I live Nick. There is NO city. We are 35 miles from the nearest city. There is no one to complain to. And no it wouldn't be me that puts up the fence. They have animals too, it is their responsibility to erect a fence since they are moving into an area that has already been occupied for eons.
My property is grandfathered into most any situation. We've been here for 50 years. So regardless of the warehouses that are being built 2 miles up the road that borders our property or the pink elephants being built, it would take mega bucks to buy me out. The biggest thing that erks me is people who don't know what COUNTRY is. Like others have stated on this post, they want the country but w'city rules. Sorry, move back to the city then.
