I live in the UK and bought 2 pekin bantam chicks as pets a couple of months ago that were unsexed. They are now 16 weeks old, and it turns out that one is a hen and one is a rooster. However, the neighbours have been complaining about the rooster's noise and we have to rehome the rooster now :( I found a farm that are willing to adopt them. However, I still want to keep the hen, but will the hen be okay living by herself? But I was worried as the chickens have grown close to each other and would it be better giving both the hen and rooster to the farm? Or is there any other solution?

Someone please help, but no unhelpful solutions as they are pets and mean a lot to us.

Keep the hen; she will adapt to being alone,or, get a second hen as a companion bird.

I live in town. I keep my roosters indoors until later in the morning, So far there have been no complaints. Our city has no ordinance against poultry unless they smell unduly much or the noise.

Hi :welcome from Yorkshire UK

Glad you could join the flock! Sorry to hear one of your chicks has turned out to be a roo. I'm afraid that's the risk of buying chicks that are unsexed. Your hen should be ok to have a friend, I've found they are much happier with company and don't get as stressed. It's good you have found a home for your boy. You should be able now to find a pullet or hen for your girl. Where in the UK are you?

Wishing you the very best of luck in the future.
Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow
