Neosporin on a Guinea?

DH has finally finished building the house part of the coop. We were moving the Guineas to their new home and Polly got a little scared and flew into the chicken wire fencing cutting her face right above the eye. Hubby got a good grip on her (football style) and held her while I cleaned it with warm water. Wow did it bleed! I put some Neosporin on it. Do you think that's ok? Is there something I should have on hand for little emergencies like this?

I used neosporin because before we moved to our farm we lived in Pittsburgh, close to the city. A friend and I started a Feline rescue program to control the ridiculous amount of ferals. a vet told me I could use neosporin on small cuts and scrapes on the cats. I just assumed it was ok for birds, but now I'm wondering if I did the right thing?

Why not. For the most part any topical stuff you put on yourself can also be used on your pets, unless it's really harsh or prescription grade or something like that. I had eye surgery a while back and I was given antibiotic eye-drops to prevent or cure infection. About a year later I had a goose with an eye infection. I tried some of my drops on her eye once a day for a couple days and about 5 days later it had cleared up. I really can't say if it healed on it's own but the eye-drops didn't hurt her.

Neosporin is ok as long as it does not have pain killers in it. I'd be a little worried about it if it's too close to the eye. Judgement call I guess. If there is eye involvement then I'd use a terramycin opthalmic ointment. Hope Polly heals quickly. I'm sure she'll be fine they really do heal quickly.

It's just normal over the counter neosporin. I figured it would be ok, just wanted to ask to make sure.

The painkillers to avoid are the "caine" ones, like benzocaine or lidocaine. I do use triple antibiotic ointment with painkiller, but the painkiller is something called paroxicam or something similar.
