NErvous nervous soft shell egg smashed......

i woke up this morning got out to my chickens about a half hour later then usual wasnt feeling well..... anyway when i got out there ..there was a soft shelled egg in the middle of the coop not the nesting boxes and it was smashed i believe one of the pullets may have dropped it from the roost no one was eating it....... and i provide thme with there own shells back to them atleast twice a wk i am nervous beacuse i have 4 hens and 1 is an active layer, but she lays later in the morning and the other is an every other dayer layer she lays late morning afternoon the other too have not yet begun to lay but the other biggest hen does look like she is squatting more today i am very nervous ..... they are new to this only started laying about 2 wks ago now and they are 24 wks old!!! please tell me this is normal since they are just starting ..... my other that have been laying never lay that early in the morning or from the roost?? please help

It is quite possible that the egg you found was from one of the new layers. They do sometimes lay soft shelled, shell less or otherwise odd eggs while they sort out their reproductive systems. It can take a few weeks for them to start laying normal eggs only, depending on how often they lay. If you are not feeding layer yet, this may be a good time to switch. Or offer them oystershell/crushed egg shells daily in a seperate container/feeder so they can help themselves when they feel they need it.

Thank you .... I do feed the layer already and like I said I give them crushed egg shells pretty often!! I was concerned it was one of my active layers already but they always go to the nesting box
