Nest Box, are mine wrong?

I made a coop out of left over fencing from Hurricane Ike...I have so far only 7 Hens, I thought I had more, long story in another forum in here..

I made a total of 4 nest boxes, but my question is this, the hens do use one and have for 1mo, and now for the first time, used a different one. The others were being used for roosting, whch Ive fixed according to what I found out in here. They are the same level as my roost I had built. So I covered them every night, so they wouldnt roost.

And now they use them...but my nest boxes are open...

here you see 2 that fit 2 hens each...should they have a top, to cover or enclose them??? I put very little hay in them almost nothing.

there not deep either. Should I fix them different? they are laying in them, but maybe I'd get more production???

I have smaller birds than you do (Silkies) but I have mine so that only one bird fits in each box at a time.
I have 10 hens that lay right now and 7 nest boxes. Their boxes are covered and have wood in between each box for "privacy". They use the bottom 4 but not the top 3.
I don't know why, I guess it's just what they prefer.

Could be because Silkies don't seem to like anything off floor level.
