Nest box bedding

I use pine shavings in my nest boxes. I change it frequently and have consistently clean eggs.

I used to use timothy hay (grass hay), but it can be dusty, get moldy, and it seems more likely to harbor parasites.

The best material is straw because its warm and absorbent enough. Wheat straw is the best in terms of insulation and drainage, though oat and barley straw are also useful. Change it often and dust it with louse powder to prevent chicken mite infestations.

Aspen bedding (in the rabbit section of most pet/feed stores) works better than shavings for me. It packs down and doesn't fly away.

I put straw on top of it for a very nice bedding for nest boxes.

I use hay. We cut hay on our property so the price is right. I like it better because after they lay you can fluff it up .
