Do chickens need a nest box with a top on it, or will just a box in a corner work? I was thinkin about framing in a couple nest boxes in two corners of my new coop I am building, any opinions or advice?

I've found that they prefer a dark place for nesting so an enclosed box seems to work better.

Thanks a lot. Love the avatar opa. Sam Elliott, Clint Eastwood and John Wayne are my heroes, lol...

Sorry to get of topic. But I had 2 JRT's and they were a handful. Do you find your Jadgterrior to be Jack Russells on steroids?

A 'standard' jagdterrier is a VERY VERY big handful. I have had a few, but the only two I kept were an aunt/nephew pair. The female (briar) is 10, and her nephew (jaeger) is 2. She is an incredible dog, you cannot find a better behaved dog nor a more intelligent dog. I do not however trust her around my chickens, because she will kill anything that doesnt belong on the place (excepting a dog or housecat) and she hasnt decided the chickens belong yet, lol. Jaeger is the one I thought I had to worry about, he is laid back, basically like a semi-calm JRT, but he doesnt seem to pay the chickens any mind at all. They are much more like JRT's than jagds. I wouldnt have a jagd that is like they have been bred to be like. Miniature pitbulls of the worst type.

So, back to topic, the general consensus is to have enclosed nest boxes?
