Nest box idea?

Hey guys! I was thinking about using this for a nest box. Will it work for them? Why or why not?

I'm thinking about trying to cover it with something, but not quite sure of what yet.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome from New Orleans. We have been using plastic milk crates with straw litter in them. Hope this helps.
I don't think you need to cover them. Maybe ventilation holes?

It looks good enough to me - why not try it and see what your girls think of it I used plastic bowls (with soil acting as ballast) as nesting boxes and they seemed perfectly acceptable to my flock.

The only thing I see is the front lip needs to be higher, 3-4" above bedding.

Looks good! A higher lip will be helpful, or try it as is and see if you need it. I’d cover it or something-the do kinda like it darker/cozy/safe feeling. You could try paper feed sacks, old table cloth or old sheets, or even some old blinds draped over them. But, the thing with chickens is they peck and pull. So, no loose threads -this can cause a crop issue if they get too much. Paper feed sacks they will likely pull off some, but likely not too much. You will see how they react to snd use the nest box and you’ll adjust!
