My Coop
My Coop
Hi, I got started with chickens when my father past away in March. He had started with twelve hens and made his coop and nest boxes to his taste. The nest boxes are wood and hard to clean. So my idea and question to each of you is this.
Would the plastic milk crates be too small for Rhode Island Reds and a unknown large hen? They are smaller than his but would be much easier to clean. Would cut down one side for the hens to get in and then attach them to the wall.
Would love to see photos of your nest boxes and any thoughts about them.
Thanks,
Rick

You dont even need to cut a side ...just turn it on its side and milk crate will work well... You can hang em or stack em...chickens dont care... Mine are wood...simple 3 wall design with a floor...no ceiling or roost bar...quite simple

Here's a pic of mine opened up. I just added some hinges to the bottom and used screen door hooks to hold it closed. I have since moved it to the rear of the coop and lowered it to just above floor level.
