You can use an old kitchen cupboard or a buffet or a hutch too. I love converting furniture to new uses. Plus it makes for less building.

Kitty litter and 5 gal buckets are too small IM(andmybirds)O.
Minimum 12x12x12...14x14x16 is better.
Did you know, they actually stand up almost completely when the egg emerges?

aart, thanks for the dimensional information I'll build it this weekend. And no I've never seen a chicken lay an egg. I think I'll copy part of your nest box as well

Then it might not matter...make it fit the space you have and whatever pleases you.
Don't forget perches about 8" out from nest entrance for higher nests.
