Nest Box padding?

Your right, it’s only about 2” high max. I knew I screwed up as soon as I had it put together. I thought throwing the pads in there would be an easier solution than trying to modify the boxes. The boxes are permanently mounted on a tractor I built.
 
these are good as is artificial grass - I wager those at the dollar shop will be almost identical
 
I use a carpet runner with some thin foam under, stapled down so they can't scratch it out. They don't even try to scratch any more, they just go in lay the egg and don't even wonder where it disappeared to.

I use the excelsior pads & really like them. The girls can still scratch around & fluff it up but it stays attached & in the nesting box.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered the product I linked above to try. I didn’t have any old material laying around to use. I’ll also increase the height of the lip if they start shoving the eggs out of the boxes.
