Nest box questions

The feather pecking seems odd to me. Every bird I've had lays and gets back out into the run (waiting in anxious anticipation for me to let them out to free range). They hang about the boxes only when waiting to lay.

When they aren't in or near the boxes, is there adequate space for them? Is there a run?

They have PLENTY of space. The coop is 10ft x 8ft and their run is also that big. I only have 3 hens. The problem might be that they lay between 2:00am and 4:00am and they don't like going outside when it's dark. But they still have a ton of space.
