I have a really small flock of two Hens, a Black Star and a Columbian Rock.
My coop has two nest boxes but the both seem to prefer only one of the boxes. I'm concerned that after one leaves the nest and the other uses it that I will get broken eggs. Is this normal behavior? I do have a removable divider that I could take out and create one large nesting area. Would that help or be advisable?
Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge with a relative newbie

Sharing nesting boxes is common. Most recommend having one nest box per 3-4 hens. I have read other posts about tilted nest boxes so that the eggs roll into a storage area so they do not get broken but I have not seen actual plans.

They won't break the eggs unless the shells are abnormally thin.
I have one coop of 10 hens that use 2 of the 4 nests exclusively.
Another coop of 10 hens and all use 1 of the 3 nests.
I have other buildings with nests that have never been used. No rhyme or reason since they're all built the same.

My coop has 6 next boxes, all in a row, all the same. I have 8 layers right now, and they often use the same boxes. Yesterday I had 8 eggs: 4 in one box, 4 in another. They seem to like laying in a box that already has an egg in it, and I haven't had any broken eggs. I have 16 new pullets growing, so there will be plenty of room for them when they start laying :-)
