Nest box size

I use old plastic milk crates that I pick up for free at our dump. They are ventilated, strong and mites will not take up residence because they are not wood. I hang then on the wall using 3 hooks for each one. In the spring when I do my clean out I take them off the hooks, spray them with a hose and let dry in the sun. I think the best aspect is that mites can not burrrow in them and repopulate.

That is EXACTLY what I was going to ask. do you hang hang them up sideways,or just straight up and down? And what do you put in the bottom to keep the bedding from falling out?
Thanks

Mine are 12 wide x 12 deep x 14 high. My hens are just starting to lay and figured out what they are for quickly, with the help of a couple golf balls in each. Its comical to watch them get in the box and maneuver the golf balls under themselves. The girls are out there baking something up right now. They hopped out of the nest boxes to have some warm oatmeal. Maybe they are making oatmeal cookies.
