nest box sizes

We have bovan browns coming. How big do the nest boxes need to be? My son likes the idea of using buckets. Are they tall enough at about 12 inches?

Lots of people use 5 gallon buckets, laying on their sides, with a barrier across the bottom of the front to keep the litter inside. Just read a little about these and they are evidently small birds, under 4 lbs., so something like a 12" cube would be ample if not too large, just to give you an idea.
