Best material for nest boxes ?

My favorite is the excelsior nest pads. I've used plastic (astroturf type), straw, dried grass and pine shavings but out of all, I and the chickens seem to prefer thee excelsior.

'Best' is what's right for you.
My 'best' is a thick flake of straw jammed tight into nest and bowled out a bit in the center.
Also have a piece of vinyl cut to fit in the bottom for easy clean-up of broken eggs,
extra piece on hand for a quick change out.
