Hi all,
just finished most of our coop and am wondering how high to put the nest boxed and the roost. We have 4 plymouth rocks, 2 rr, 2 light b's.

thanks
Mt

Some people put in a ladder type roost so the chickens can have a choice on what height they want to roost on. I have my roost in my "pet" coop at about hip or waist height (my hip/waist area), they are much lighter weight than my orpingtons, so jumping down from that height dosn't bother them, I also have a ramp for them set up to the roost area. In my Orpington coop my roost is much lower to the ground for those heavyweights...maybe only 18 inches or two feet (sorry I am so bad at guesstimating). You do need to make sure the roost is higher than the nest boxes though...

I'm putting my roost in today.

I'm placing mine 4 feet off the floor.

It's one 2x4 and will go the length of the coop (12 feet).

I will put up lower roosts in corners using some large tree branches we have.

Yesterday I put my egg boxes in they are 2 feet off the ground. I don't know if I need a ladder to get them up to it we will see I guess. haven't gotten the roost in yet.

Just make sure the roost is higher than the nest boxes. They will roost at night at the highest point.

Is 2' too high for nest boxes? They are large bread chickens.
