Hello everyone. Hopefully I have the right section for this question. If not I will post under egg laying and behavior. Will try here first.
We have six hens and only one has layed for us up to this point. Most are going to be very close to laying soon based on age & facial color etc. We have 2 Bantys and 4 standard size hens.
My question is we have 2 nest boxes in the coop built to size recommended here 12x12x24. I also have 2 additional next boxes in the 8ft x 10ft daytime run. One of those is a plastic tote at ground level and one is about 2 ft up on the other side of the run. Should I remove the ones that are in the run and only have the ones in the coop? I dont want to confuse the girls but want to make sure we have enough boxes to keep everyone happy. Need to know what you chicken eggsperts have to say. Thanks all in advance.

Personally I wouldn't put any in the run. It might encourage them to start laying anywhere. Do you have room in the hen house for the extra nests? You could get by with 2 nest for 6 hens.

Not really. Ours is an A frame design and with the 2 already in there it doesnt leave any room for additional. The only thing I could think of would be to put the plastic bin on top of the one in the coop. Then remove the other one in the run.

If you already have 2 nests and you only have 6 hens, you don't really need the extra nests. Save them for your next hen house.

Good luck.
