what is the best way to keep hens from sleeping in nesting boxes

Block them off with a piece of plywood or whatever you have available. Do they have enough roosts to perch on? Good luck.

Here is a trick I used years ago when I had wooden nest boxes and no bars to put in front of the holes in the evening. Take and tack and old towel, sheet whatever to the top and drape it in front of the holes to prevent entrey. In the morning throw it up on top of the box. In the evening when I collected eggs (I usually collect around 5) I simply dropped the cloth back in front of the holes. It stopped the hens from roosting in it.
