nest egg or not?

Do you leave a nest egg each time? My husband says you should, but when I was little I don't remember doing that and we always got eggs. Does it help or does it depend on the chicken itself? Does it have to be a real egg or can it be a fake egg? Thanks for your help!

You can use golf balls or fake eggs and that may help your hens to lay in different places. I put plastic easter eggs in my nest boxes because they just layed in one, now they lay in two out of four.
