Do I have to have a nest for each of my chickens?

No, I think it's 1 to every 3-4 chickens recommended, however all my chickens only use one or two of theirs. I have 8 layers at the moment, but this was true when I had 12.

Put fake eggs in the other nests and they'll get used

I have 5 nest boxes with a golf ball in each one, for 24 layers. I get eggs in 3 or 4 of the boxes daily. Sometimes I have eggs in all 5, I get 14 - 19 eggs daily still.
