Do hens need a nest to lay eggs? Should I have one nest for each hen? How large should it be? Do they need a roost or perch as well?

They will always make their own nest if free-ranged. I remember going into the barn and finding nest in the strangest places. In an old ringer washer, tool box, bed of a broke down truck and even in my horses feed bin!

You can give them a nest box or go on egg hunts daily. I just use an old milk crate. One nest will work for about 8-10 hens. They tend to put their eggs where he others are. I just put a "dummy" egg in the nest box and they seem to see it and say"Oh, that's where I should put mine too!" Hope I helped. Best of luck!
