I've heard one nest for every 2-3 chickens.
My hens aren't laying yet, but they all huddle up in one during the night, so I'm sure they'll share when they're laying too.
 
No. I have 18 hens and six nest boxes. On a typical 15-16 egg day, 10 eggs or so will be in one of the nest boxes and the remainder divided between two of the other boxes.
 
Ok thanks. I have 6 and I made two large nest boxes.

Hens are silly that way, sometimes they wait in line to lay in the same nest box. Some can't wait and just lay on top of the present occupant. They may even fight over the perceived Best nest box - while other identical nest boxes stay empty.
