So I went to fetch eggs this afternoon and was greeted with my chickens nesting on top of eachother rather than in their own box. This is weird, why would they do that?

Quite simply, because for both girls that is their favourite nesting box, and they both had to go NOW!

Mine are the same - I have 6 layers and 6 nest boxes, and they all cram into the one box, lol.

It's the nature of the beast - no-one wants to back down and lay in an 'inferior' box. Even if they all look EXACTLY the same to us, ha ha!

Makes perfect sense, lol ! I had never seen that though, got a good chuckle out of me!

Yeah, mine did it just last week.

I sat down next to them and asked them if they were comfortable, and suggested maybe would one like to move into the attached nest box where there is a little more space.

I gave the top one a little pat on the butt and she moved over and sat down for a minute. Then she looked at me, looked at her neighbour in 'her' favourite nest, and climbed back on top!

You can't understand the mind of a mad chicken!!!

Haha that's brilliant and funny :D I know what you mean about nest boxes being the faves, sometimes I catch the rooster and 2 hens crammed into one box. Fair enough the girls being there but the rooster doesn't need to be in there as well, unless if course they were quarreling and he broke it up by squishing in between them .....
